BTG 106 - Outrageous

September 30, 2024 · 25:08

UFC Fight Night 243 in Paris was outrageous. Some wilds fights, finishes, post fight antics, interviews, and fines. I talk about the main and co-main events, my opinion on the athletic commission fining an athlete $250,000 for bad sportsmanship, and why failing a weight cut is inexcusable. [Music] hello and welcome to the breaking the guard podcast on today's episode I'm going to talk about the UFC Paris that just went on the main event being benois St Denise versus hanato money moano and uh I'll tell you what moano delivered on this one I know I think the last time I talked about him was he did a UFC uh five pass Invitational and kind of sucked uh this time he didn't at least in MMA he's very exciting and this was uh no exception uh Beno came in with a lot of hype and deservedly so but moano really derailed him uh immediately took him down of a beautiful catch kick like he just good timing took him down and just dominated him on the ground just Solid ground work uh was able to score Mount got a nice tight uh leg cross so he's riding kind of like a low Mount and was just pounding with elbows and was able to slice him open pretty early and Beno was pretty helpless on his back uh not for lack of trying just couldn't find a way to get space and he would try to roll to expose his back and he would end up getting body triangled and then he would roll back into the mound and and I thought this was a very good use of top position which is just bludging him repeatedly um could have maybe done a little bit more uh to try to find a finish uh but I mean at least a 108 round for sure because it was just a one-sided beating and he looked I think the one thing that I would say that moano was very fresh didn't look fatigued at all he didn't blow his load he was patient it was a five round fight but he was very patient even with such a dominant position very early so you know some people might fault like maybe too patient but he definitely won that round and was fine the next round what was interesting was the Damage Done to benois was remarkable his eye was completely swollen and honestly he was shut after the first round couldn't see anything second eye was pretty bloodied as well but not he could open that eye um and fatigue wise just was a bit drained however on the second round benw did pretty good considering like he was in there and he stuffed all the takedowns that uh hanata tried to score and maybe you could even say that he won that round just by out striking but I think this is what's also interesting is that if you understand you know how fight injuries work when you got swelling it only gets worse in a fight right like it's going to continue to swell so it didn't look like hanato was trying to finish his fight it looked like he kind of just waited for the eventual outcome which was a doctor stoppage right because M cono did lay some hands on him and benan also was able to connect a few times on feet no sub stantial strikes really but obviously because of all the damage that W already did whenever he touched them those his blood pouring all over beno's face he just looked like a a mess and it was very clear that he was blind on the I guess it would have been the right eye uh and in between rounds they went to check him and he confirmed that he couldn't see out of his right eye the was you know putting up fingers and he couldn't tell when he covered the left eye so the doctor had explained to the ref like you know he's blind out of the right eye left eye can still see and that's enough if you can't see out of one of your eyes they stop the fight if you want to be in the fight you have to lie about that as a fighter right that and that's well known right if you want to stay in the fight you lie about that ability so you could just keep fighting now it didn't seem like he wasn't happy about the stoage but it didn't seem like he was too unhappy he didn't just he didn't argue it either so I think it was a fair call in the sense that he was fine with it happening you know and if you ever verbally admit that as a fighter that you say oh I can't see it's over so you if you want to fight regardless of the consequences you always say I'm good I can see and you know if that if I was in that situation and I wanted to continue fighting I would just start saying numbers even if I couldn't guess them right and I would blame just translation issue or I'm fighting it's hard to understand you right like uh but the moment you say that you can't see it's over all right uh but that said mccon looked pretty good strategically you know he was uh he was sound in his his process you know of you know very controlled domination and then just allowed time to do its work even if he might have given away that round I'm not sure if he did uh but not much really happened that round um but coming out of that clean that's nice the second thing that I didn't realize until seeing afterwards that apparently before the fight he had a pretty severe AC separation so the shoulder joint here from the I guess is this the clavical my anatom is not great but this bone was sticking up so at least a grade two from my understanding on an X-ray it looks pretty nasty even just on Plain skin you could see it jutting out hard like almost poking through the skin uh so having that type of performance under those conditions also extra impressive and also I might explain why you want to be more reserved right like if I could just control my way through not put too much stress on that injury so that you know I don't get into my own problems later in the fight also very high IQ move there so uh good on him also made lots of uh wild call outs about the the French government and all that which you know he's on brand for doing that uh interesting to do that in another country though where you know you don't necessarily have the right to say whatever you want uh as we find out like one of the guys on the card uh I guess I'll talk about them later but the other fight that was that was consequential here besides moano was Brandon Allen and nardine IMA now IMA has been racking up some pretty solid wins and Brendan Allen was like a good test for the both of each other because basically if either one of them was winning of whoever would win would probably be the next on that title shot territory at least that's the hope and uh Brendan Allen the very beginning round one took him down immediately didn't do anything really though which this is where I say you need to work uh so he won the round by control not by damage not by doing anything significant just by control whereas in the next round imaba was ready for those takedowns was able to stuff him and put a good beating on Brendan Allen as it seemed that Brendan was focused on trying to get takedowns and rounds two rounds three imov controlled him entirely uh and to me easy decision win for him uh and again impressive win as well uh the next fight well the the one fight I went to talk about which was interesting was Brian battle and Kevin J and Bri Brian battle was uh egging on the French crowd apparently I didn't know anything about music but he played a song that something the ratory about Paris right um and uh I guess the French crowd didn't like that and then they were booing him the whole time he ended up uh winning by TKO and started flipping the the French people off got on the mic and did not relent either much uh very bold uh to do in this other in another country right and um I guess the French government didn't like it or the because from my understanding now he's banned from participating in any sports in or in MMA in France and uh they're a $250,000 fine to me that seems insane right um mind you he didn't say anything about the like M cono didn't get any of this as far as I'm aware and you know he said you know [ __ ] the French government F mcon you know F Global is you know so he was actually calling out you know the the French government so to speak right so but he didn't get in trouble for that but um battle flipping off people who are booing him and perhaps playing the song that was inappropriate I don't know uh getting a $250,000 fine listen he wasn't a headliner man like he's not getting that type of money and you know uh so I'm curious how that works like how are they going to hold him accountable because if I'm him I'm like okay I'm just never coming to France again I'm not going to pay these bills are you are you are you are you crazy like he's not making 250 in that fight you know he's lucky if he's making 50 um so that seems drastically insane for uh an expense as a penal now mind you you you if you've listened to me you know I'm not a big fan of people you know talking crap and you know being very inflammatory and he clearly was all of that but there is a place in it right that's what in pro wrestling you call the heel right the guy who actually attacks a crowd and then the crowd gets animated against that guy you need a bad guy so that the good guy can shine right like they work in conjunction and clearly he was being a heel right he was all about it so as much as I would prefer that Sports didn't have this it does and we're not going to get away from it because it's very marketable obviously I'm talking about it and lots of people are talking about it so like it's a thing and to penalize somebody for playing on that seems outrageous right if the UFC doesn't like that they would fire him right I'm pretty sure the UFC likes it to an extent maybe not to the extent that they're probably going to have to pay this fine for him uh but short on that they do like that type of attention but it's just strange that I've never heard of anything like that before where like you you booed the crowd and or you reacted to the crowd booing with middle fingers which we see pretty often I don't think it's a good idea but we do see it and then heard of anybody getting fine $250,000 it's a quar million do that's for you know undercar fighter or he's not I guess he was in was he on the main card I think he was on the main card but you know he wasn't you know Co main event or anything like that so like he's not getting that type of pay you know so that seems like out of proportion right if you're going to take maybe 10 20% you know fing for the the the Paris athletic commission okay maybe you know but uh I I maybe I'm talking out turn I don't know how much he's getting paid but I just historically uh people are not making six figures you know when they're like the fourth fight in the main event right like co- Main Event Main Event you know you're former champ okay excuse me but um yeah I don't think he's getting that type of money so it seems like the the the penalty is way over the top and uh then you have other things that are crazy like uh uh one of the the prelims and I'll pull this up here this girl she was talking mad crap about and I'm sorry I'm looking down here I'm just trying to find the fight here where is it okay so Sher dog doesn't pull any punches either overweight Perez Taps zel zelenak man I butchered that sorry but she was talking crap about another female fighter who had to cut her hair to make weight and then but she made weight but now she goes to weight and then she misses weight and uh it's like okay well pop meat Kettle and not even because you know you made your weight you just had to cut your hair to do it this woman could have cut her hair and she didn't and still didn't make way either way um so that didn't help and This Woman's known for doing her little um butt shaking routine which so low class in my opinion she wins by arm triangle and then gets up and literally shakes her ass in in front of her opponent's face purposely because when the opponent moves she moves to do it again see to me that sign of disrespect that throw a fine on right like oh God but you know she does want to fight so it's like what's this girl going to do get into another fight with her you you already lost one you know like it's just it sucks you know not cool not cool you know but that's the fight game for you but uh she didn't get in trouble although that I don't like uh a sore winner especially when you technically cheated to get in there by failing your way cut I would be I would feel embarrassed if that ever happened to me and you know uh if anything i' would be apologetic maybe offer a rematch when I can make weight I've never missed weight uh so I couldn't comment I feel missing weights one of the most unprofessional things you can do I've had bad weight Cuts like I've talked about before where it took me four hours to make weight but I made weight I didn't like punk out and say he couldn't do it you know I I I did the job right so I don't really have mercy for people who who Miss weight I don't understand it it it makes zero sense to me you know exactly what's going on you have a scale if you're a professional you have a scale at your house um checking my weight every morning I check my weight you know after a workout so I understand how much weight loss I'm getting after a workout so I can kind of Judge where I'm at in my weight cut and how much time I'm going to need right and even when I did have a rough cut because I was uneducated and didn't realize that flying in a plane changes your hydration levels and you become more resistant to dropping weight I still found ways to make the weight it just takes more time and more suffering right so like for me it wasn't a matter of like oh my God how am I going to do this it's like how long is it going to take because in my case I was on a cut off there was only four hours for me to cut weight I made it just on the very last second I was the last person to make weight um but most of these people in the UFC they have a lot more time than I did so unless you were very Reckless and yeah that's why I feel like in in my case it wasn't like I was off by like 20 lbs you know it's like I was off by like 3 or four lbs where I expected to be but I'm like okay is this going to be more time to put in right when you see I mean from my she missed by like a half a pound which seems like man you could really you should be able to get that right uh because it's 1362 so like I think they usually give him a a pound buffer for non-title fights so if I understand the weight class correctly so yeah I don't weak sauce man like make your [ __ ] weight you know uh I again there's no excuses for it you know your weight your whole time you should have a good scale at your home you should be checking you know before workouts after workouts have an understanding you know and if you're in the UFC it's not like you're you know you're competing on a Naga for your first time you don't know what you're doing like you should have high level coaches and nutrition and fitness people all around you telling you exactly what to do so and you have the resources of UFC who will do that for you there's no excuse you're just being lazy or you're being a cheater you know so I I have very little remorse for people who fail weight Cuts you know you know what's going on beforehand it's not a surprise it's not like oh we're gonna magic you know we're going to surprise test your weight today it's like you know your weight every freaking day of your life you know if you're a fighter and you're doing a serious weight cut that is your battle right it's one of the things I don't like about fighting I've talked about it you know but it is a reality of it so don't pretend that you don't know where you're at right that always pisses me off you know because i' I've had it in you know my team I think I've only had one guy not make weight under my cornering and he wasn't putting in the work fortunately his opponent uh didn't care but I was embarrassed I was not happy with it at all and I knew like this guy was clearly slacking off and he you know he ended up winning the fight too which is you know I mean great you know one of my guys but also a little bit like I don't like that right like there there was no excuse for it that was the only fight that guy had with us so I mean I think it was one of those bucket list items he just wanted to scratch off and I guess he got to do it but not a good showing as far as like professionalism like generally we always make our weight and we've had guys it's happened again that was only one in 20 something years of coaching that we had a guy that I was coaching that failed weight uh so I've been on the other side more times where people fail their weight cuts and then they want you to give them a buy you know it's like no man our guys suffered you know we we went to the trenches to make this wake cut happen you know we got guys doing saunas and hot bats and doing all the dieting so if we had to put that work you're putting all that work into right like there's quarter pound great that means it's not going to take that much work right like it's not being petty it's being fair you know there's people like oh you know you're it's just a pound it's like if it's just a pound then lose it right and you're like oh well it's going to take a lot of time well oh so it's not just a pound then right it's actually a lot of work and you didn't do that work so you're going to have to pay the price now instead of you know you would have been more prepared it this would have have been an issue right but you're trying to get the benefit of not having to put the sacrifice in so you can recoup better and uh you know this is a fight you know I'm not here to make things easy for you if I'm the fighter I want you to be as miserable as possible getting in there right uh to enhance my odds of winning right uh especially with something like this you know I mean I'm not saying like I would want somebody at the worst right clearly I want to fight somebody at their best but at the same time under a fair condition whereas if I had to go through a weight cut you're going through that same weight cut right uh and if you didn't prepare properly and you have to suffer a little bit more that's on you not me right we have a contract says we're supposed to fight this way so don't make it don't make me the bad guy because I'm enforcing what the contract says that I follow them so anyhow that's my take you can see I could get a little heated on that because I've had it happen where people didn't like and you know I've talked about this with P haris how he didn't make weight he was like 10 kilos off and he got away with it nobody pushed him on it uh that's totally Che cheating not cool and a lot of people suffer the consequences you know of that so I always feel like if we agree on things you know and it's on the and on the rules they should be followed just by the virtue of them being on the rules even if I disagree with them for example in ACC you can you know juice to your heart's content nobody's going to judge you or test you for it I don't like that but at the same time those are the rules I can't complain about it right if I don't like could I could either not compete or I could juice up myself right I just always chose to compete regardless but it's not something I can go afterwards and make excuses about like no they're they're in the rule set right uh so it is what it is I don't like it I wish the rules would change but if it's there that's how it should be played that's how it's allowed to be played so that's fine so that's all I have for you today the uh last thing I'll say and if you guys want to write in I appreciate that I'm going to be going to Japan uh next month end of October to like early November first time I'm going there never been there before uh just going for a vacation with my wife uh if anybody knows any cool things to do there you know obviously I'm looking into things to do uh we're into nature and the the cultural significance or we're traveling all from Tokyo to Nico to Osaka and visiting all over the place also since I've been doing the carnivore animal style diet looking forward to having some authentic KOB beef and Wu and all the other meat products there that should be cool uh and seeing some of the the wildlife there like the Bowing deers the snow monkeys and stuff like that um but if there's anything that you guys know about there that maybe I'm missing out on let me know uh I was kind of bummed there's no Sumo tournaments during my stay uh so I guess I'll have to be for another time but uh if any of you are in Japan you're interested in having me over or having me stop by let me know too uh I don't really have any plans as far as teaching there but I guess I could change I'm there just more for a vacation enjoying myself there hiking and whatnot but uh at the same time I'm not going to be busy the whole time obviously so maybe I can make some time to stop at in somewhere you know IID probably like to see the Kota con just for the historical purposes and the significance in the martial arts so uh anyhow drop me some lines there you can send me an email David david.com or just comment uh below other than that you guys have a wonderful day and I'll see you all next week
