BTG Special - ADCC 2019 Day 1 Bracket Review

hey what's going on guys David I'm on here with Robert Drysdale with a special episode here breaking the guard where we'll be going over the brackets for the ABC c 2019 World Championships we're gonna just focus on day one action alright which is two matches for the the men one match for the women and let's not waste any time Robert we're in the men's 66 kilo division this division we have had it's been dominated by the number of people in the past I think that Hoyer was really dominant for a minute and then Leo was the guy and then - Mendes was the guy and then Cabrini was dominated and now it's kind of like open like who's they were gonna be the next reigning champion for the 66 kilo division look a lot of big names I'm excited to see a lot of the young young and up-and-coming grapplers but let's start with the name polo meow he's at the top of the bracket there against Kent Ewald oh I'm guessing he's from but you know I'm gonna go with Paulo just because it's Paul with me out yeah Oh though I'll be frank with you like I don't think that their style is a great style for noogie cuz it's very difficult to finish sweeps unless you got something to hold onto yes right especially that open guard kind of stop so I think that a lot of guard players a little hurt in a noogie game especially in a DCC where you know it's you have to practically pinned a guy to score the point hurdle is not enough right so but I'm gonna go with Paul on that first fight yeah I would agree with you and I do share that assessment I don't like I don't think Paul's gonna go all the way through but nothing getting by that first one and that brings us to our second matchup on the top left side of the bracket which is Jamel Hill versus Nicky Ryan well that's gonna be it's interesting because they're both American they're both up-and-coming right they're both very young I think Jamel has the experience on Nicky I'm always been very impressed with our ovens camp yeah you know like he is probably considered the best of American coach in the sport you know I think that's fair to say like he's put out a lot of good guys Jemile is you know someone that was you know bread inside living gap and very dominant I haven't seen him enoki much that's you know Nicky specializes in OB so there's that I'm leaning with towards Jamil because the experience but the noogie his lack of experience noogie I'm assuming I haven't seen him much no yet could be wrong you know does give Nicky an edge because that's all he does right so I don't know Dave yeah that's where I'm at - because I haven't I haven't seen a match with Janelle doing noogie I've seen him doing great with that key so and then we have Nicky who's all noogie so I'm kind of I won jamil to win but I think Nikki's got the edge here so I'm gonna go with Nicky on this okay I guess people are turbine guys but like yeah I don't know I just think it practically I think Nicky you will probably have the edge in this I'll put him down and then goes to our next match now which is August Oh Mendes we keep Krekorian um I think I moved Ahmet is my favorite in whole bracket I'll be I'll be upfront with you you know I think I'll go to him and he's like deserves an eighty CC tile he's been all my favourite guys for a long time he's got a very unusual game for a lightweight because normally the guys in this division want to be on bottom very few guys in this division want to be on top and on both of those play guard you don't see him there every often because he accepts being on top right but he's got a very wrestling oriented game which an eighties to see we know is that huge factor so ICO gusto having an edge over everyone in this bracket my personal opinion he's the favorite to win the whole thing but you know Keith is he's young kids do up-and-coming you know I've seen I know I know of him because he grappled max you had a tournament in Portland a while ago and you know I thought max was gonna win the whole thing but it was his kid beating max so I know he's definitely up there thought yeah I think nineteen years also the favorite here yeah so I think he's gonna win this one he's unsweet bubble in that division I don't see anyone sweeping that kid ever and he also has the experience I think that just keeps first going ACC and then coming from a no time limits rules where he competes a lot in this is going to be a big shift and you're going against a vet who's very well and the other thing too is the guy that's gonna say I'll go swim in his experience is like I think it's probably the most experien guy in the whole bracket like I'm looking at the bracket now him and froze out to the most extreme and then we got Geo Martinez in my tills Gabrielle this is an interesting matchup to me and I think we're gonna agree on this because geo was very submission oriented very noogie my toes Gabrielle is strictly ghee I've never seen him noogie I could be wrong maybe he's exceptionally just never seen it might very much like Jamil but my toes cabrillo really impressed me in the featherweight division the World Championship this year like I had never heard of him and he walked in he was beating guys and on paper he's not supposed to be and it was beaten right so he's on fire right now I think it's an interesting matchup it's hard I have a hard time picking the favorite because Mathilde's was it was it had an exceptional performance of the world but Gio does have more at least nogi experience right yeah I believe this is the second go at ACC I'm gonna go with Gio I don't know much about Mateus yeah so that's a no not gonna him I just don't know about him but I know Gio and he's a very dangerous competitor to a very good submission so it would be interesting to see he's probably the best guy out of 10th planet I would agree I would agree and now we are in the top right side of the bracket with Pablo Monta Vaughn then Thomas help in there yes I hope and butcher butcher is like last name but I'm living with Pablo on this one Dave more experience very successful IBJJF competitor and even though a lot of these guys do Jeff circuit has always been morgy oriented even though there's that there's also a factor that these guys by the time they get to need to see they have well over a hundred competitions of their belt yeah like a guy like Pablo probably has like four or five hundred matches in his in his life right so that experience counts like you're in that competition circuit where you're every weekend competing to score you know like the IBF opens and in Brazil they don't have IBF opens all the time but they have tournaments going on every weekend so this guy has a lot of experience I don't know about Thomas I don't know where he's gonna be as far as you know his matchup stylistically against bobble but I know Pablo's very experienced okay well I firstly I don't know much about you them I don't Thomas I believe he's coming from Ireland I think he was a European Trials champ I could be wrong there but like you said even in that part of the world they don't have as much competition you know say oh definit does I have the experience and then next up we have Bruna Fasano vs. Tyra - and this is another experience it is it's interesting I just know Pablo Bruno and ty are all from Otto's and it's interesting to me to put everyone like we're gonna you guys are all cancel each other out the first second round yeah they had said that in the rules media there was a particularly with this division there there was a lot of people in the same camp and they're gonna take him out within the first two routes so they're you know they're bowing on defiance so they did that and I'm gonna go with froze out over the experience but again you get these these young kids my god they're so hungry they got they got everything to prove so there's that element of like I don't care I'm just gonna go out there and it's almost like reckless but it works in their favor because I think so I Boros gotta be more i it's almost like he's got an obligation with replacement he doesn't really have anything to lose here he's everything to win you know that's a good shot for him but yeah I think Prasad will take that one and moving for we got Johnny great ball things one of the favorites to win the whole thing I think that's fair to say Richard alicorn I don't know alicorn I don't I don't know him I don't I've never heard of them but doesn't say much in a DC man we had one of our guys from Nashville Tennessee Alex he beat Johnny grupo at the Pan Am's nogi just like a couple weeks ago you know and use them up and coming guys same thing so you never know right yeah I think johnny is an open guard player and like Paul and me all that style is is hurt when it comes to noogie I think that guys with that style don't because they lacked it's so hard to hold someone down from a sweet especially needs to see week it's got to be guard or half guard or side control you know and it's so guys scrambles so well they're so athletic I think that that style is on its way out when it comes to a DCC I think we're gonna see less and less of it in the future and the guy's gonna be dominant more of a top player like wrestling oriented right but Johnny's certainly more experienced and I still put him in one of the favorites in the whole division yeah I agree I think Johnny will like I said I don't know much about Richard either like a no-knock kinda I'm sorry I just don't I haven't seen you compete much so I'll go easy on you there and that brings us to our final match which is a Canadian Maciel and one Alvarenga I know the name one I'm trying to remember where I know him from but I've seen him compete before I think any of my things a lot of pressure on Kennedy because he's opening a Sun and like always he's gonna take the crown you know he belonged to his father it's gonna be his now I think that this the experience is is not quite there you know I think he's got an edge on one good you know I've seen don't know much of about who won but I'd be compared to the rest of the guys in the bracket like I don't see Kennedy being a favorite to be honest but I think is he's you know you could potentially you never know you know I think this this side the bracket is a little more balanced or on this side I just can't see anyone being know goes to man just to be honest but you never know yeah so we went through a first rounds so then second rounds on the top left we have Miao and we were kind of split yeah I think you had Jamal you had Nicky and I'm Nicky so the winner of that next match yeah because I I think y'all was gonna have the edge experience edge over both but is it's his it's that that open guard style is a rough one a DCCC man like those guys don't do you know only guess he can get up but Paula Miao is his guard is unpassable you cannot pass his guard and but you know it's it's hard to finish sweeps so it might go over time and over time it comes down to the wrestling and I think Jamil will have that advantage for polum you but you have Nikki on that one you cannot foot lock Paul to me I'll do that right now yeah it's not gonna burn your energy trying but like it's it's I think it's up in the air you know it's hard to say yeah yeah it's definitely a tricky one good you feel exactly the reasons your outline yeah I'm not sure who would win that I'm just still gonna lean towards you if it's Jamal or Nikki I lean towards either one I don't know because I'm just going for the American yeah it's just I always give it's a difficult getting difficult it's it doesn't translate as well we don't you know so and then moving forward we have all goes to many and no geo Martinez kind up in the air as well I personally think I'll goose will beat them both just because you know he's not someone you can take down or sweep very easily you know and he's got really good wrestling very strive I'm training with his name is Tong keen which is a little tank it does feel like a little tank on top it's crazy how heavy he feels considering his weight yeah as he's in the 66 kilo division but you feels like someone in our weight class well my weight class blame in-n-out that's all I'm saying they're like right by my house all right so we got so we got them either Jamal Nikki and the top left and then we have almost all gusta Mendes yes left and then on the top right I think Rosato is Pablo and frozen I'm gonna resolve on that one happened and and the bottom one is between Gianni and Kennedy hard to say I don't think Gianni again just the experience but you never know but I'll go with the experience edge there you agree I think Johnny is definitely more experienced yes so probably a little edge over Kennedy there okay so that wraps up the 66 kilo we'll move now to next division which i think is probably gonna be the most this is this a very dynamic man I'm actually gonna talk about the heavyweights I've never been so excited every we're gonna get this is great but this is the distance to be more dynamic right so we have jttours opening the bracket with Ross Nichols day-t decorate okay John combs and DJ Jackson I know I like DG to death I'm just gonna go with John combs because I think that he's dude you see as a matter of cyborg in a noogie world's yeah it's he's I I put him with the top five American rappers like he's like at least the up-and-coming generation like he's up there man DJ submit them with the squeeze of diesel they're guilty okay okay so DJ has you know I just want to know at least want to know all right okay all right so John is probably one in revenge against DJ so me and Glaber split on that one it could go either way like I could see DJ would totally see DJ beating him I just like John I'll always like that kid he's been a very very humble kid I've known him for a long time and you know I really root for him moving for we have Gary tonin Mattel's gum rot I know my toes just train with him in Poland yeah he's a very skilled in the main fighter he's doing a DCC just because he's an overall badass like he's one of those guys right you can have him play golf and he'd probably do well you know he's just one of those guys but he's up against Gary tonin one of the favors for the division I'd say I think that he is definitely you know I mean Gary is a favor for this fight but what I've trained with Mattel's he can impress us about anyone yeah surprised I wouldn't be surprised if he outdid Gary it wouldn't be it wouldn't blow my mind I wouldn't consider an upset right but I think it's nods our faith the odds are certainly in Gary's favor yeah I would agree and then moving on we have Hinata kanuto with Oliver tazza I think I'm gonna go with a not though just because thing with him and he's a very very intelligent competitor yeah he knows yes competes well no doubt and I think he will overcome Oliver he's also good at not getting in trouble with his legs very wiry kind of like you know like wet noodle kind of guy and he's very hard to get ahold of cause he's so relaxed way moves yeah so you know I think he's who and that's the one domain where Oliver would have an advantage over kind of - maybe yeah maybe but I think everywhere else can generally speaking is more well-rounded moving forward Lukas lepree I put it Lucas Leopard nester jttours the two favorite for these of this division then I guess I'll head way down there too and there's but Lucas lepree and Lachlan Geils I've known walking for a long time I'm I just don't see him beating Lukas it could happen you never know man like I know he's been he's improved a lot over the last few years but like Lucas on top he's like that out that all goes to man is of that the 77 he killed he's just like so tight when he's on top I haven't never had an opportunity to train with him but people rave about his passing game you know this pressure surreal so I don't know Ken Lachlan get it on underneath them and tacky no attack his legs clearly luca's lepers aware of it it's not gonna be surprised when he walks in there and I know I've been working with his wrestling a lot yeah and this is a patient because he felt that's what cost in the last 80 cm so you might be able to but then again you know I saw that maximum that's a tough matchup yeah and before both you know it's not an easy first rounder then Don Tulio and Jonathan said tava same thing up-and-coming Americans lots I'm not - I know Dante I don't know so tava - well I've been following the table since he was a purple belt I think they're equally matched I think a go either way but uh you know Dante really impressed me the last nagi worlds so I think it's a close one man yeah go either way all right and then we have Vanna Rocha and Serbia - Leo and the Rocha as a veteran I think he took a bronze in 2017 in very good back attacks and kind of like what we talked about yeah where you have a style that favors attacking the back and finishing there and he's got his infamous mother yeah yeah I think he's obviously one of the guys who could make it running for this I think he's one of the favorites - he's up there I mean but serve there's no joke you won the Brazilian trials super competitive she's a Philippe you've been his main training partner in Brazil so you know they prepared you know he's got solid training partners why the way man like I serve is legit I know sort of I've been falling for a long time he's legit he's up there and then finally we have Edwin Dungey and salsa Vinicius I had one fan favorite very articulate very just an overall badass good everywhere so souvenirs it's got the best deep half guard in the business if you ask me but he's from my generation and the fact that he's still competing here it's like you know kudos to sell souvenirs because we won the world's G the same year 2005 oh wow 2019 and this guy still out there so yeah I do give Edwin the edge here just because it's the youth and a very he's one of those guys that he's dangerous everywhere like there's no place where Edwin is like all he's gonna be easier to beat here I can't think of a position where anyone is gonna be easy to be no so he's another one he's another favorite in the bracket no doubt okay and then if we sum up then to who's gonna get to the semi-finals so on the top left we said JT Torres and then we were we were between John Combs and DJ Jackson you had John a DJ and I'd still have to say JT is the favorite to get into this enemies I think I'm in between I think yeah I think JT is no I'm out of the same is that for sure JT and then underneath I'm already look at the final I'm like way out of it I'm gonna go with JT as well it's gonna go Gary tonin and canoe two most likely moving too many things we're gonna save that one for the next one yeah Sami's JT over John combs or DJ I'm gonna go with JT and then underneath it Tony on kanuto I'm gonna go with those beating them before yeah I think I'm done with canoe too man not by much I could go either way but I'm gonna go with kinetic yeah I think well I think he said he's just a little smarter and the way that he's gonna go actually in and you know in a point system that it is not Gary strong suit you know Gary likes to have fun out there and he he'll go for crazy stuff like he had a funny magic magneri he's like doing the look cartwheels and dancing around maybe not dig into that seriously but I think you cannot though he's not gonna play around no I'm gonna go like you know it not by much man it's like a this is one of those 5149 kind of deals I don't write top right we said Lucas and then either done T or Jonathan so since I centavo yeah I think Lucas was like and then on the bottom that's the interesting magic because I think we would think Vagner and Edwin would be in the core notes but serve you is no joke man so it could go either way up top like I think Vagner is a favorite yeah that experience but surgery was very good but I think Edwin goes to this Emmys I see Edwin make it to the same I think just just overall just more articulate between him and vogner a tough one man like it by the way yeah it's definitely a tough math you know it would be the interesting one to see yes I know bank nurse he's also not a guy was a very smart like technician he's not going to take any chances whereas anyway is known for being more aggressive yeah and being more that's very dangerous yeah he's a finisher no don't I'm gonna lean towards Wagner on this one okay all right and now we move to the 88 kilo division and this is one like we said before it's wide open because there's no defending champion here there's no even I'm not gonna medallist I don't think they're leaving the whole medal so there's no matter Craig was number four he took fourth but the metal technically yes so it's what like it's it is the division that is up to grabs no doubt yeah you know that's the one that Gordon Ryan won last year at 88 Keenan Keenan yeah take it out so I'm gonna go with Craig on the Miss Ben Dyson yeah and Mason Fowler they'll do that I was you know buddy Eric comes from cyborgs camp because a monster yes yes very tough wrestling yeah I don't know I think Mason he won that American Trials he's also I believe a wrestler I could be wrong sorry if I am I'll go with BB Araujo I'm moving forward there I'm surprised roofs done to make eighty eight kilos guys everybody's day and then he's gotta get he got loose Tom's got John blank I think we're both gonna go with roost on on this one and then underneath them Santana and Keller lock so d Santana yeah and now on the rooster match not to sleepin John blank he's a 10th planet product big big guy for tempeh ok very good grappler he's the combat reducer world champion ok he's got he's got just weeping Roose tom is gonna be he's gonna be tricky yeah but he's a good submission guy as well he's gonna hold something off yeah he's a couple of Mikey more chop highlights all that link is and he's got a lot of good submissions so but again with rooster so hard other recently he got caught by Seiichi armbar he got caught by well it's it's a he's a typical wrestler he's not a submission or it's like he's is one of those guys will get on top of you and you can't move him right yeah but yeah I mean you should say job like maybe he'll surprise or a stump I'm going with roost on because I know I'm I've seen him yeah and now I'm gonna go boost him as well I think the odds fear him but like you said I'm not gonna be surprised if John's able to catch him and then top right Josh ginger and Gabriel Alameda I think hey Josh yeah of course and then we have Adam - Mike I'm gonna go with I like them both I'm gonna go with Adam cuz like I Adams been I've been following adams curse since he was a blue bow so he was been coming to my seminars in Poland and have a lot of friends in common I trained with him last I was in Poland he's on fire man like but Mike Perez is a very difficult guy to beat has a good style he's able to squeak out wins and you know maybe not the most exciting match by the day it's about the guy who gets hand raised yes you know how to do that if he but like Adams are the best butterfly guard in the business you know and I play butterfly and I'm telling Adam that the best butterfly the business so so it's a game that translates really well nogi you gotta keep that in mind you know moving forward my toes your knees in bedroom I do think my tails all day yeah I agree and then underneath them Gabriel arches and Alec balding Gabriel urges yes fair enough fair enough and then that brings us to the the quarterfinal matches Craig Jones and we said araújo I think Craig's on that one and then we have rooster rooster Santana more Santana I'm gonna go with man actually I hate those guys like there's a hardest guy to beat in my opinion man like just the guys that just you can't sweep them you can't get underneath them you know but boudreaux's marilla man but I think roost um stylistically I might have an edge you know I'll go with them as well so I always love a good rushing going in there yeah bring a monkey wrench injured and Adam we had them were Mike Perez you like the one but I'm gonna go with AD Josh regardless yeah I think Josh is rightfully favorite in division good matchup here with Matthias and arches that lean towards Matthias but I I I'm gonna lead towards my cells just because he's got when I think of ours always think of him like in a guard and he's got some it was a very good guard but I think my toes got good wrestling and I know I keep saying this but I truly believe that a t2c rules are very wrestling oriented yeah you know they're standing oriented especially that one that one that when he get into overtime you know you can't Bogart oh you can't you're gonna be penalized so the better wrestler is gonna have the edge now we go to the 99 kilo division and we have Gordon Ryan versus Ben Hodgkinson that's a tough matchup for ya Gordon's on fire you got a game at 1 yeah and then we have Tim sprigs and Philippi Andrew my boy yeah I liked him I liked him he's explosive he's dangerous but 50p is ranked number three in the world man you guys know that you know that I was Bush I think the second is low in the ghee right Philippe is number three and in the world so I don't when B was like is talking about inviting for the god of sake what are you talking about he's not even a question he's more accomplished than half the bracket like I actually you know what were you guys talking about not invited for the pictures crazy so I'm going to go through but Tim's legit man so it could it's one of those like 5149 I'm just being completely biased completely biased Lukas Barboza and per to tip Onan probably murder that but Lucas Barboza I think it's one of the favorites and division yeah it's definitely gonna be I gotta to be here and then you have Patrick audio and Mirage of Dorian I don't know is good I say it does it say it fast people are the impression oh you know proud you know don't but that's Rick all day Patrick all day and then Vinnie with Dan Martinez any all day Vinnie for sure and then text Johnson James that's a good text Johnson all day I think they're the same campus I think Tex Johnson's representing arrows oh okay then James Popo Louise Lovato student was also Ribeiro so it's not a coincidence right yeah they're doing at the all brackets and then Jackson Sousa and polish it I don't know Paulo does that maybe if I see him and recognize him but so I'm gonna go with Jackson Mike Rice and Vinicius fajita and Paul ardilla Venise is a legit man I know Vinicius very good topping kind of like the roofs Tom Connor game okay you know probably the more aggressive with the passing but I don't know poor Adela so maybe you can comment now unfortunately I don't I don't know who either so I think it's a recent invite like it was I think the Kenan jumped out and then all jumped in I think that's what happened it could be wrong yeah I'm not sure we got that then we go to the quarterfinal matches we got Gordon and then again we're still disputed did you Philly a bit but Tim I think I I'm gonna go uh I'm rooting for Felipe's I think Orton is a favorite I would never call Phillippi or Tim underdog right in terms like remember for the kids ranked number three in the world you can't call that guy an underdog against anyone he could be Bush and that would not be make him an underdog you know number three in the world you know if that's per the IDF rankings so but I think Gordon is a favorite I think that I where's a win of course but Gordon is definitely the favorite heroes by but you know Felipe's got vicious foot locks if Gordon gets funding with those four locks careful man like he's IIFA leaves are the best straight four locks in the game and a straight for Locke it's not I'm gonna get out you can't get out of a street flick of its own you cannot tap but it's one of those things like getting out is very very difficult yeah I'm gonna go with Gaudio on that one I think it's a better wrestler even though Lucas wrestling really impressed me at the no geek Grand Prix you tell me Dave thoughts I'm gonna lean on the Hulk just okay I'm that recent performance and then we have I think Vinny he's gonna come out on top against X good thing is you can't foot lock Vinny it's such an advantage like Vinny is like born with us like crazy joints like you can't armbar him you can't before lock him can't you know so he's a hard guy you have to basically opposition open which is hard to do because he's only been submitted once as a black belt I believe in those by Roger Gracie which is not really an octave wise if you don't get submitted by Roger B that's what's surprising all right and then Jackson and I we're gonna go yeah I said Vinicius what like you know I would go with you again I'm actually I'm gonna go with I like Jax he's a good friend of mine but I want to vinius is on this was stylistically it's a bad matchup for Jackson mm-hmm if that and match ends up happening right I'm gonna go with uh okay so we got we got Gordon I mean we're talking yeah yes our vinícius over Jackson yes all right the final men's division with a 99 kilo plus we got buchecha with Antonio Brian Metro so Busha old a favor of the bracket fair to say but again a lot of good guys hear me let's throw burger that's it from my I fought him twice at the last time I competed IV differ worlds like he's you know a little bit younger than me I think but like he's just not he has been the competition circuit the last like you know 5 10 years yeah right so Marcos I made is to me the most impressive guy to watch in BJJ because every single time you think this guy is gonna lose he does something completely unexpected and pulls off the win with like 10 seconds left yeah and he does it over and over and over so wish fish all day angry then we have Jared op and Victor Hugo I'm gonna go with Jared better wrestler I saw the victors go as a big kid out of the Ribeiro I believe maybe I miss quoting he was in the Grand Prix but Jarrod's got better wrestling so I think he throw by should please guard so you're probably gonna pull guard on Jerry Yuri versus Elliott Marshall I like Elliott good friend I just you know Yuri is top four in the whole bracket so and twice a TCC champion yeah he's actually going for a record to win third three different visions different divisions up to break a record this is again we're talking about we kind of forgot about but this is again the most talented division in terms of rankings because you have four returning champions yes with buchecha UD cyborg and Big O Orlando Sanchez so and they've been placed in the opposite corners of the bracket I think rightly so yeah I agree there's gonna be some very interesting semi-final matches I think but yeah I agree with UD winning that win against Marshall and then I think its Kenya Duarte and elder ruff-ruff-ruff you guys I'm gonna go with kind none just out of experience and like how well kinda has been doing recently yes but it's it's - Division I have no idea what he's doing the 99 9 he's definitely division below so he's probably the lightest guy in the whole division Orlando Sanchez vs. Mattel's Juvia I'm gonna go with these polish I'm pretty sure yeah based off the name and put Orlando is and Orlando's up there with blue shish in this division if you ask me I think he's the closest version of the juggernaut yeah the humor got a hundred percent that should be his nickname yeah with Muhammad Ali and this is a very interesting matchup because you have two guys who have very good stand up games but from different stylings Muhammad is more of a judo yeah stylist and then you have Nick Rodriguez who's coming from that wrestling I'm gonna go with Muhammad Ali based off the experience you know Nick's very young and he just got into the circuit did really well two trials but there's a big difference between trials in the actual thing right now
